BRITS holidaying abroad are being warned they could be hit with costs of up to £45,000 if they fall ill or have an accident.

With thousands preparing for their annual break, many families believe that a European Health Insurance Card is a suitable replacement for travel insurance.

However, health authorities in Spain – where a whopping 30 per cent of Brit holidaymakers head in the summer – often refuse to accept EHIC cards, leaving summer breaks ruins and finances bled dry.

“There is a misconception that the EHIC is a form of insurance cover, but this is not the case,” said Sarah Findlay of a finance website.

“The cost of uninsured repatriation could be as much as £45,000, a sum most could not afford without a loan

Latest retirement hotspots could impact your pension!

August 3, 2010 by overseasinsurance

Spain has topped a list of the most popular retirement destinations overseas, as experts warned living outside of the European Union could result in your pension being cut in half.

The latest retirement hot spots index by financial services group Standard Life revealed :-

1st   Spain
2nd France
3rd  America
4th  Canada
5th  Ireland

Andrew Tully, senior pensions policy manager at Standard Life, said: “Retiring abroad is a dream for many people but without careful planning and advice, things can potentially go wrong very quickly.”

If an individual moves abroad permanently, any increases in their UK state pension will only apply if they are living in an European economic area – including Gibraltar and Switzerland – or a country with a reciprocal social security agreement with Britain.

People living outside these areas will see their state pension frozen at the amount initially paid when they first claimed.  Popular retirement countries outside these reciprocal agreements include Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.  It means the basic state pension could halve in real terms during a 20-year retirement, according to Standard Life.

This factor needs needs to be considering a retirement Overseas as if there isn’t a reciprocal agreement in place, then you need to be very careful your retirement income is sufficient to cover your living costs over a long period of time.”

Overseas Mortgages

August 3, 2010 by overseasinsurance

Many people buy their overseas properties using an overseas mortgage, and often the overseas mortgage companies insist on the buildings insurance being arranged in the country the property is in, with a company they have an agreement with.

This was common practise in the UK,  however legislation has ensured UK  banks and building societies can no longer insist on the the insurance being arranged by a specific company.

Cyprus, Portugal and Spain to name but a few all insist on buildings insurance being arranged locally.  This often not only fails to provide the insured with the best cover available, it often fails to include vital landlords liability protection, and often includes unrealistic unoccupancy conditions.

However help is on hand!!  You can insure the contents of your Overseas Property and include £5m liability protection in the UK with a company of your choice.

Some Overseas Management companies insist you have at least £5m liability cover before they will manage your rentals. To obtain a quotation for your Overseas Property Insurance visit www.overseaspropertyinsurance.co.uk and request a quotation now.

I have Overseas Property Insurance – Do I still need Travel Insurance?

July 2, 2010 by overseasinsurance

Recently, we have been asked by our clients to provide cover for their personal effects when they visit their holiday homes.  Whilst cover is provided for these items within the holiday  home,  no cover is provided when the items are taken outside the holiday residence.

Overseas Property Insurance  is not intended to replace your Travel insurance, as this covers you against loss of personal effects whilst on holiday.  Not only does Travel insurance also provide valuable protection for your personal effects (jewelery, ipods, mobile phones, cameras etc), it also includes cancellation,  medical, dental, repatriation, luggage, curtailment cover – to name a few.

If you decide to travel without Travel Insurance (which is not recommended) another alternative to protect your personal effects whilst you are abroad would be to extend your UK  contents cover  to include all risks outside the home.

Buyers of UK Insurance can be confident that the regulatory Ombudsman is available to provide an independant view of a complaint.

May 19, 2010 by overseasinsurance

Below is a summary of the annual review of personal finance disputes.  The summary provides an interesting insight into the service the Ombudsman provides.  All clients who insure with a UK company should be offered this service.

Ombudsman service publishes annual review of personal finance disputes
19 May 2010

The Financial Ombudsman Service – the independent organisation that settles disputes between consumers and financial companies – today publishes its annual review covering the 2009/10 financial year. The review shows that during the year, the ombudsman:

  • Resolved a record 166,321 disputes – a 46% annual increase –resulting in compensation for consumers in 50% of cases.
  • Handled 925,095 consumer enquiries – over 3,500 each working day.
  • Saw the number of  insurance disputes increase by 38% (largely due to the rise in complaints about payment protection insurance), and complaints about banking and credit rise by 30% – but investment complaints stayed at the same level, motor insurance disputes decreased by 13%, and pension complaints fell by 27%.

Natalie Ceeney, newly-appointed chief executive and chief ombudsman, said:

This month marks the tenth anniversary of the Financial Ombudsman Service. Ten years ago the ombudsman was set up by law to settle 25,000 disputes a year – this year we’re expecting to resolve 200,000.

While the aims and values of the ombudsman service remain unchanged, this eight-fold increase in our caseload means we are now operating on an entirely different scale. And these high numbers of complaints look set to stay – so we need to plan ahead on this scale for the next decade, ensuring we are ready to meet the demands and expectations of our increasingly diverse customers and stakeholders.
Statistics from the ombudsman’s annual review show:

  • Payment protection insurance (PPI) accounting for three out of every ten new cases referred to the ombudsman service – a 58% increase on the previous year, following a three-fold increase in the year before that.
  • Complaints about unsecured loans and financial hardship rising – but complaints about credit cards and mortgages levelling off.
  •  Complaints about consumer credit (including “point of sale” loans, catalogue shopping and credit broking) more than doubling.
  •  The proportion of complaints referred to the ombudsman service by claims-management companies on behalf of consumers continuing to increase – from 26% to 28% of all cases. Two-thirds of cases referred by claims management companies to the ombudsman service related to payment protection insurance.
  • The ombudsman resolving 38% of all disputes within three months and 67% of cases within six months.
  • Half of the total number of disputes referred to the ombudsman service involving four of the UK’s largest financial services groups – while 2,259 businesses had one complaint each.
  • The proportion of complaints from “skilled and semi-skilled” workers (“C1/C2″) increasing by 21% – with complaints from people from professional backgrounds falling by 23% in the last three years.
  • 75% of adults saying they had heard of the Financial Ombudsman Service – with awareness of the ombudsman highest in the Wales and lowest in Northern Ireland. 97% of people said they had no problem finding the ombudsman service’s contact details

How to choose a reputable rental company!

May 12, 2010 by overseasinsurance

Holiday home owners take a huge risk every time they let their holiday homes to strangers.  With the summer season fast approaching many owners are now considering whether or not to let their property, and if so which rental agent should they use?  Holiday letting can be lucrative, however before letting consider the following advice;

Before letting your property there are a few questions you need to ask yourself:-

  • How do I choose a good letting agent and avoid the unscrupulous/ bogus letting agents?
  • Does my insurance cover me to rent my property?
  • Can I manage the lettings myself?

HOW DO I CHOOSE A REPUTABLE LETTING AGENT?

Some rental agents request large sums of money up front to advertise your property.  Some take your money and do not deliver any rentals.  How can you avoid the pitfalls?

  • Do extensive research on the web, checking sites where complaints, comments relating to poor service may be posted:-

www.theanswerbank.co.uk
www.complaintsboard.com
www.overseascafe.com
www.ripoffreport.com
www.singingpig.co.uk
www.canyoutrustthem.com
www.scamfound.com

  • Visit Owner Forums where you can interact with like minded people and ask for rental company recommendations.  These sites are often country specific and therefore if you are buying in Bulgaria you will receive recommendations of rental agencies that operate in Bulgaria.
  • When you are close to making a decision use the Owners Forums to ask for feedback on a particular rental company
  •  Speak to other owners in your complex and discuss who they use and how happy are they with their choice.

DOES MY INSURANCE COVER ME WHILST MY PROPERTY IS RENTED?

  • Owners need to protect their investment against damage from holiday makers and insurance bought in the UK offers comprehensive cover to ensure you do not lose out financially.
  • Insurance purchased abroad is often cheaper; however it rarely includes accidental damage whilst the property is let.
  •  Accidental damage caused by guests can be minor e.g. broken crockery, soiled linen etc; therefore taking a deposit to cover small incidents is a good idea.  However there will be times when the damage exceeds the deposit therefore ensure your cover includes protection against accidental damage.
  •  Theft cover is often restricted to there being evidence of force and violence to enter or exit your property.  This means if the property is entered by a key the claim would not be covered.
  • As we are not tied to one specific insurer we can offer cover with or without this restriction.
  • Public liability cover that incorporates holiday letting is vital.  Cover arranged through www.overseaspropertyinsurance.co.uk includes £5 million protection.  You do not want to have to pick up the legal costs should legal proceedings be filed against you

DO I NEED TO USE A LETTING AGENT?

An alternative is to handle the letting yourself and simply advertise your property on the internet.  There are number of sites that offer this facility (not limited to those below):-

www.holiday-rentals.co.uk

www.holidaylettings.co.uk

www.ownersdirect.co.uk

  • Advertising on any of the above provides a cost effective way to market your property worldwide and connect with the millions of travellers seeking the space, privacy and value of a private holiday home.
  • Costs to advertise are relatively low compared with utilising a rental agency, and mean you stay in control
  •  Consider if letting your property whether long term is a better option.  Letting your property on a 12 months lease may deliver less rent per month however occupancy is guaranteed.

FINALLY
If it sounds too good to be true it probably is!!
Do as much research as you can
Speak with your insurance company to ensure you are fully protected whichever option you choose
